Best SMART Board Lesson Ever!

My best SMART Board lesson so far was with comparing fractions. I used the fraction cards that I scanned into the computer and took a picture of them and had them on a new page within the notebook file. Students then needed to come up and color in the fraction that their card said. For example for the card 3/4, a student came up and colored 3 of the parts in with their finger. Other students found the card to check to see if it was correct. Then I grouped the coloring and card together so that the students could move around the cards while still having the coloring on it. On the next slide there was a line where we put the 1/2 fraction card. Then students came up and moved the colored fraction cards to above, below, or on the line. Before students could come up to the board they had to sort their own cards at their desks. That way I could see who was understanding the concept of comparing fractions. Students were very excited to come up to the board and move around cards.

  1. Good idea with scanning the cards and taking a picture so you could move them on the Smart Board. I like how you have ALL students sort their fraction cards at their desks, too. Go active participation!

  2. Sounds like a great way to look at fractions. I like the way all the students were involved, individually and on the SMART board.

  3. Way to go, Alexa!
It sounds like you used all the ways to involve the class, and you yourself used many different ways to get the type of activity you wanted to teach.

  4. This is a great idea! After I was done with this lesson I was thinking that this would be a better way to teach this for next year...Being reflective in our daily SMARTboard work is key! Could you please send this file to me so I can use this for next year! Thanks!
